WHAT HAVE I LEARNED:This week was more learning the colors and trying to get them down but I really didn't practice that much because of school. But I have gotten the alphabet down almost completely and I can do it very quickly after thinking about it for a second and remembering. Still a little work on the ASL letters needs to be done but overall I have passed that and am only working on it a little bit each day to keep it in my mind. The colors have been pretty simple due to the fact that most of the colors are just the first letter and then a hand movement. Which is good because it also helps me with remembering letters but also since I had already learned the alphabet so that helped me with the alphabet and these colors are not taking to long to learn. MINDSET/HOW AM I FEELINGAfter another good quiz scoring 10/10 I think this week was as good as any even though I have barely practiced because of school and sports going on taking up a lot of time. I am still pushing to get my goal done but by now I have mostly given up on learning the song and have now been trying to learn as much as possible and have started thinking about how I want to put it together. Hopefully the next weeks are better and I need to stop procrastinating and get as much done as possible.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED: This week was a week where it was very much a good amount of reviews from the last weeks. I am still working on letters and this is the most challenging part as far. I have been practicing for a while and have been getting almost all the way through but was getting stuck on the letter T from the alphabet. The colors have been pretty easy but I haven't really focused on them as much because I have been trying to get the alphabet down because this is the most important part and is the main thing I have wanted to learn. I have taken a couple more quizzes that test my skills that I have learned and I have been getting better scores on them because I have been practicing more than usual due to a little bit of extra time. HOW AM I FEELINGThis week is where it is starting to feel hard to keep practicing due to school and sports. There is so much work pilled on each week from from every class along with homework and tests. It is still pretty fun to learn the letters and the different aspects that go into ASL.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNED:These next lessons I did were challenging as I expected them to be. I have been really focused on learning the alphabet which I haven't improved on very much. But I have almost got the colors down and mastered. So I need to put a bigger focus on the letters and get them mastered within the next couple weeks. The next lesson he showed me how to do was pronouns, they started off easy with simple hand motions like pointing and simple signs. But after the pronouns started to become plural it became more difficult and I had to stop the video and rewind it a couple of times to make sure I was doing the same thing that he was showing. After that we moved onto a little video talking about deaf culture and it was truly interesting to learn about what goes through a deaf person's mind and what they think about their hearing loss. After that video was a quiz reviewing the things from the lesson, it started off easy with things I had remembered but once it got to the letters I forgot two of them and then the pronouns came and I messed up the one example that was on the quiz. I ended up getting 7/10 which is better than I thought I would get because I sped through this unit and need to study a lot of the things I learned. Then to finish off the lesson it ended with a small wrap-up. HOW AM I FEELING:While doing this lesson I realized how much stuff is getting piled on to the study load, and that I need to take some time and get all the things I learned mastered and be able to do them while thinking about them or when someone is trying to talk to me.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNED:This week was a good week, on the little review he talked about that this lesson will be about numbers eleven-twenty. Along with learning the alphabet, well he went over the letters and it was as tough as I thought it was going to be. The numbers are pretty easy and I was able to get those within about thirty-forty minutes to get them down and mastered because they are just different versions of the other numbers. But once he got to the letters I realized this would take me hours and days to learn, along with learning the letters you also have to keep your hand in the right direction and you can't change it back and forth because that is confusing to the person you are signing too. I printed out another chart that they had for practice so when you have it mastered you can check it off to show progress. But some letters are easy and I got them and remembered immediately like A and of course Z which are super easy. Along with K and B are easy and I will be able to master them very easily. HOW AM I FEELING:This week I was feeling good and was ready to learn some sign language. From the overview that was at the end of the last lesson and was concerned about the alphabet. My fears were met with what i imagined and when he was showing the letters it was hard to remember them and even be able to sign them because of the way your fingers are supposed to be and it has to be at a good speed so it doesn't take too long to spell the word.
WHAT HAVE I LEARNED: I also This week was a crazy week and I didn't get to do as many ASL lessons as I would have liked. But this week's lesson was a quiz reviewing lesson one and taking a quiz to be able to see what I learned and need to do over again. This really showed me the practice I need to do and master the simple beginning signs. Then after that I moved onto the next lesson and started off with the colors. He taught me how to do red, blue, pink, green, purple, white, brown, and black. These turned out to be super simple and easier than i thought because they either went with the starting letter or were just simple motions. I will be practicing for the next few weeks and I printed out a chart to be able to keep track of what I have mastered and be able to check them off a little chart. HOW AM I FEELING:At the start of the Genius Hour Project I couldn't decide on what I wanted to do, there were a lot of things I wanted to improve on in the sports and athletics category but my parents mentioned the idea of doing ASL and I loved the idea. At the start it was very simple and it was a sign that everyone knows by just talking to people and being able to read emotions and face expressions. After doing the colors it seems to be simple for now. But after looking up what the signs are for the alphabet which he talked about was coming up i am kinda concerned that it is going to be extremely hard to learn all the letters. There are so many different ways you have to move your fingers, but I am determined to figure it out.
Figuring out how to start: When learning sign language there are many ways to learn and many places to go to learn about it. So I searched around and with the help of my mom, we found a learning program that has different lessons for beginners to be able to learn from scratch and keep moving up through lessons. They start out super easy with the basics and then in between the teacher’s videos, there are ways to keep track and practice to make sure you are understanding and actually learning things from video to video. While looking for a place to start I was thinking about how hard it will be to learn and remember AS: because it is completely different from anything I have done. What have I learned so far:So I have set up the account and got everything ready to go. Today I worked on learning a little bit about the background of ASL. In today's lessons in the beginning I learned things about body language and facial expression and how important they are. He should example of what it looks like without it and with body language and there is a big difference. In the next lesson, he went over simple signs and things most people know from interactions with people not even using ASL. Then there was a thing where I can keep track and help me remember what I learned in the lesson. The final lesson was numbered, it was only the first 10 but before I thought it would just be the regular fingers held up but once you get to the number 6 it changes and you have to fold your fingers inward to create 6-9 and then 10 is a thumbs up.
About the project In the beginning I couldn't choose what I wanted to do. But after thinking about a couple things I chose sign language because i have always wanted to learn how to sign to be able to communicate with people who have hearing impediments. I am going to challenge myself and try and learn as many things about this as I can to be able to show that I have accomplished something with this project. Knowing another language will also be good to have on your application if you want a job because maybe another person with the same stuff as you doesn't know another language so you are able to bring more to that company and they might hire you because of that. Progress This week i haven't really done much besides start this blog and website. I have used this before but it took a little bit to get the hang of it because its been a while. This week I have signed up for lessons to be able to start making progress and learning the basics. I am going to get a lay out down on how much I want to be able to progress per week to show that I am working and to have things to show how far I have come throughout this project. Why Sign Language
I chose Signing over learning spoken languages is because I have to learn one for school and I wanted to try something new that would also help me. Its something that isn't taught at Davie so not a lot of people know how to sign and it would be cool to do as a project and also learn something that i can use to help someone if they are hearing impaired. |
